DON'Ts of Research

Do not,

- not work hard
- show the unwillingness to learn or to go the extra mile
- not be there when required
- make excuses
- show that you are ignorant or obstinate or both
- not learn to adapt (e.g. do interact with members of the opposite gender…the attendings do not only want a machine as their resident but a friendly person willing to fit in and culturally adapt)
- accept a J1 visa. The J1 research visa has a lot of problems that are very hard to go around for people from Pakistan etc. I would recommend you come here on your visitor’s visa and during your impressive probation period, ask for an H1b visa.

J1 short term visa

Hello Umar sir,
I have got an offer for radiology research for 6 months no paid in a very good university on J1 visa.
1. Do u think applying for both Radio and Int med is a good idea?am planning for 9 months of research in radiology and 2 obs in int med
As radiology is so hard to get.
2. I wanted to stay back and do observerships in int med but I have heard for J1 u have to come back and go again is it possible to do tht?
3. How can I find out if the two yr rule is applicable for me? Is it? I plan to do more research in radiology which would be on J1 and then apply for residency on J1 again within two yrs of the current J1? Would it be possible at all?
4. How many years of research do u think is enough for radiology?

hi  I have a query too I

hi

I have a query too I recently got a position for research in cardiology at NYU and they said they will accept me on a b1 visa...i ll be working fr almost a year there starting from april and will be applying fr match 2013....some of my friends were saying that one should alwaz work on j1 when doing research as it gives u more credibility...is there any downside of working on a b1 visa over j1 except fr the fact that i wont get paid?

J1 Research to H1b

Hey. Firstly thumbs up dude for such a nice site.

Although i understand that you advise against getting a j1 research visa. But still if i go on research at J1 Research without 2 year obligation,

1) How long would it take to convert to a J1 Clinical for Pakistan? I see quite a number of people have done it on forums but still a lot of them have their stuff delayed too much. (I guess not a good idea to do )

2) What abt J1 Research to H1B Clinical ? Is it as bad as converting to J1 research or its easy ?

3) How about getting an H1B Research and doing research for like 6-7 months and then transferring to H1B Clinical? Is this the EASIET method ? ( I do understand the long term implications for Fellowship)

Please advise with the best option to chose from.

Regards

Thanks for your kind

Thanks for your kind words...

1. anything from a week to several months...

2. depends upon your research program visa policy

3. i dont think it is possible to find h1b research for 6-7 months

J1 Visa for research

Mr Umar,

I just came across your site and i find it quite relevamt to the issues pertaining to me.

Well, I am applying for the match of 2012. However, I have been offered a research position at one of the most prestigious positions. It is unpaid and is offering a J1 Visa.

I am highly doubtful of this visa as I am unaware of whether it can be converted to any other visa (J1 clinical or H1) for residency without the requirement of serving at home country.

I am not sure if the highly desired position is worth the change in visa status.

Appreciate your response,

SH

Research manuscript or Brief report

Hello. I recently submitted my research article to a journal with an impact factor of 3. however, i received a reply from them stating that the paper will not be accepted as a major article, rather i would have to shorten it to a brief report. I was wondering, should I try submitting it to another journal or should i go ahead with this journal as it may be my only chance? And do major articles have more of an impact than brief reports on my CV, or is the fact that i have published a paper is enough?

Hope to hear from you soon!

Thanks!

Both options are equally

Converting J1 Research to J1 Clinical/ H1b

Can anybody please enlighten me on this topic? I have heard from lot of sources (though none personal ones) that it is possible to convert J1 Research to J1 Clinical or H1B. But I would like to know how practical is that... For ex, if I take J-1 Research right now and then plan to apply for Match 2012, what will be my chances to actually go ahead and get it converted to J-1 clinical/H1b in time for my residency?

Yes it is quite possible....

i hav an option of doin a research fellowship in echocardiology. as i am interested in IM i hope its relevent ?

plannin to give cs during my research as it has to be for a min of 6months.

The biggest problem with J1

umar's picture

The biggest problem with J1 is its home-country requirement... some do get extensions and some do get waivers... echocardio is good esp if u plan to go into cardio(fellowship after IM) in future... u can certainly give ur CS during ur research...

Hello, i am getting a 3

Hello, i am getting a 3 months unpaid research position and a chance to get published if i get good work done in this time. I haven't done any Steps yet but i am willing to keep them on postponement phase as this research is in my area of interest.

1) How can i convince them to give me a B-1/B-2 Visa? Also since i am a medical graduate and am still in the country away from my home country, what chances does it have of being successful?

2) Do you think i should just accept J-1 Visa and go for it? Do you think that will hamper my chances in any way once i get my Residency started?

1. You cannot convince

umar's picture

1. You cannot convince them..... universities usually have their own strict visa policies and are rarely convinced to deviate from them...... if they dont have any policy, then you can try.....

2. No it would not....... go for it.......

As far as I know u have to

umar's picture

As far as I know u have to get J1 visa... I know one similar case and in that case, the person went out of US to get a J1 visa while she already had a B1/B2 visa but she was not allowed to do electives on that... anyhow u can request the department and see if they help...
